“The dog park has become a favorite destination in towns and cities across the nation. Dogs can run and play unfettered by leashes and restraint while their owners congregate and discuss their dogs, share their joys and sorrows, gossip, and even venture into political discussions.

The dog park pictured in the painting, in San Anselmo, California, was an ex-ballfield of a generous-enough size to preclude most dog skirmishes which are often the result of too many dogs in too small of a space, territorial as they are. As I drove up and parked my car, I was immediately aware of the bright late-afternoon light on this mid-October morning. Some of the deciduous trees had already turned to bright orange, and the late afternoon sun enhanced the intensity of the colors. The blue of Mt. Tamalpais in the background added the perfect counterpoint to the warm colors.

I took perhaps a dozen reference photos because I did not have my paints along and hoped I could perhaps capture the scene at home in my studio. Luckily, the photos gave me what I needed. I composited the figures from several photos into the painting. I added in my friend Stephen and his two dogs making their way down the far path onto the field. I was there to meet him that day but didn’t realize he usually parked on the other side. I also painted in his blue-green van, the last one in the line-up on the road at the other end of the park.”
