The original painting is of the dunes along Route 6 in North Truro (Cape Cod), MA.
This 1995 painting was mostly completed using photo references and a pastel study, during a painting demonstration for the Orleans Art Association.
“Cape Cod, Massachusetts is a unique place with its very own landscape. At the very tip of the Cape, from Truro to Provincetown, there are miles of undulating sand dunes along the ocean side. John F. Kennedy signed an agreement while President to keep much of this area undeveloped, and the Cape Cod National Seashore was created. There are a few privately owned dune shacks along the stretch, but the area remains mostly wild, with native shrubs, dune grasses and wildlife protected from the blight of development.
Many artists have captured the beauty in paint. “Sunset Dunes” is one of my own attempts to depict the afternoon sun on a stretch of dunes along Route 6A in North Truro.”
