“Provincetown, Massachusetts, on the tip of Cape Cod, was once a thriving fishing village, with a fleet of boats that headed out to Georges Bank in the North Atlantic for cod and other fish, including whales, in the 18th century. Times have changed dramatically for the fishing industry, and much of the once-fertile fishing grounds off the coast are nearly depleted. There is still a small fleet of commercial fisherman with their vessels kept docked at MacMillan Wharf in the Provincetown cove. This painting depicts a view of the wharf (facing west) from the bay shore just before the center of town, just after the sun had set.”
